From brilliant Bangkok to exotic Chiang Mai and pristine Singapore: this 12-day tour is a journey through contrasting cultures and sights. Admire the gold temples and floating markets of Thailand’s frenetic capital of Bangkok before sampling the lush scenery and cultural charms of its ‘Rose of the North’—the mountain-framed city of Chiang Mai. Your vacation ends in the city-state of Singapore, with its space-age towers and world-class shopping. |
There’s no two ways about it: we fit a whole lot of Thailand into this seven-day, hostel-based extravaganza. Start things off by hopping in a tuk-tuk for an insider’s view of Bangkok, stopping for a tasty street food crawl in Chinatown. Next up, visit Kanchanaburi and its infamous World War II sites along the River Kwai. Then, grab a bicycle and explore ancient ruins before catching an overnight train to the north. Get a true taste of local life in Chiang Mai by cruising around in a songthaew, visiting temples to give morning alms to local monks, and sharpening your kitchen skills with an optional Thai cooking class. |
DAY 1: USA—Bangkok
Board an international overnight flight in the US for your journey to Thailand’s capital of Bangkok.
DAY 2: Arrival Bangkok
Take a comfortable transfer to your hotel in this vast metropolis and enjoy the remainder of the day to relax and recharge at your hotel as you please; perhaps dipping into the city’s shopping malls and restaurant scene later on.
DAY 3: Bangkok
Today, enjoy a guided morning tour of Bangkok’s top sights. Explore the Grand Palace—a walled residence beside the Chao Phraya River that was home to Siam’s and Thailand’s kings between 1782 and 1925. Explore this stunning complex of gold-coated palaces and halls as your guide charts their history, and visit its Temple of the Emerald Buddha, where pilgrims pray to a miniature 15th-century jade Buddha statue. Continue to the beautiful Marble Hall and after lunch at a local restaurant, enjoy the afternoon free before sitting down to a delicious Thai set dinner at your hotel tonight.
DAY 4: Bangkok—Damnoen Saduak—Bangkok
After an early start, journey west to Thailand’s famous Damnoen Saduak floating market. Enjoy views of Bangkok waking up to the day along the way, and at the market, settle into a boat to roam the canals crowded with floating and waterside stalls. View the wealth of fresh fruits, vegetables, and souvenirs on offer, take photos of the bustling scenes, and purchase any goods that take your fancy. As you explore, learn how the market developed and gain insight into the daily lives of the vendors.
DAY 5: Bangkok—Bang Pa In - Ayutthaya - Bangkok
Today brings a day trip to Thailand’s UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya, an archaeological park featuring the remnants of what was once the medieval capital of Siam. On the way, visit Bang Pa-in, a cluster of 18th-century pavilions, residences, and gardens used by Siam’s kings as a summer dwelling. Wander the manicured lawns and bridges of this gorgeous retreat to see highlights such as its Thai-style lake pavilion, a glittering mix of gold eaves and multicolored tiles. Then, continue to Ayutthaya to explore its crumbled temples, pagodas, stupas, and statues of Buddhas—all of which were once part of a vast royal city. Cover highlights such as the Yaichaimongkol Temple and Mahathat Temple—the latter home to a much-photographed stone image of the Buddha’s face entwined in tree roots. Finally, board a modern riverboat to cruise back to Bangkok along the Chao Phraya, soaking in views of the riverside villages from the comfortable interior or decks, and enjoying a buffet lunch as you sail.
DAY 6: Bangkok—Chiang Mai
Transfer to Bangkok airport and fly to Chiang Mai, Thailand’s northern capital. Nestled in mist-veiled mountains, this culturally rich ‘Rose of the North’ offers Buddhist temples, open-air markets, and many mountain attractions. Meet your local tour representative at the airport and transfer to your hotel to relax and get your bearings as you wish.
DAY 7: Chiang Mai
This morning, journey through Chiang Mai’s rainforest to the Mae Rim Elephant Sanctuary, a camp dedicated to caring for rescued elephants. Observe the elephants and walk with them in the forest as you discover how they’re looked after. Next, savor lunch at a local restaurant before visiting a community of the Big Earring and Long Neck Karen tribal peoples. Meet the women of these ancient hill communities and browse their wares of hand-worked souvenirs, including silks and other fabrics woven on wooden looms. After your cultural discoveries here, return to Chiang Mai to enjoy the remainder of the day as you wish.
DAY 8: Chiang Mai
Today, visit the Temple of Wat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai’s most iconic symbol and a major pilgrimage location. Standing on a hilltop 1,050 meters above sea level, this 14th-century temple boasts a gleaming gold chedi said to hold a piece of the Buddha’s shoulder bone. Climb stairs flanked by ornate serpent carvings, see the statue of a white elephant—depicting the animal said to have carried the bone to its resting place— and admire the chedi and temple grounds, rimmed with terraces affording spectacular views over Chiang Mai. After a restaurant lunch, browse a Thai handicrafts village for mementoes such as hand-painted umbrellas, silks, and wood carvings.
DAY 9: Chiang Mai—Singapore
Today, fly to the island city state of Singapore, on the Malay Peninsula’s southern tip. A mix of different Asian influences, this unique city blends modern skyscrapers with Chinese shophouses, British colonial architecture, Hindu shrines, and the incredible three-towered Marina Bay Sands—a hotel topped by a 57-story-high infinity pool. After landing at Singapore airport, meet your local tour guide and transfer to your hotel.
DAY 10: Singapore
Today, experience a full-day sightseeing tour of this extraordinary city. Call at waterfront Merlion Park, home to the half-lion, half-fish ‘Merlion’ statue that is Singapore’s mythical symbol; visit the Esplanade—Theatres on the Bay, and behold the bird’s-eye views from the Marina Bay Sands Skypark observatory. Other stops include the Helix Bridge, 19th-century Chijmes shopping complex, the art déco Parkview Square, Little India, and Singapore’s futuristic Gardens by the Bay—a trio of waterfront gardens boasting plant life from around the world and sci-fi-like cooled Conservatories and Supertree structures. Marvel at the vertical-garden Supertrees from the aerial walkway and delve into the Cloud Forest, a glass-framed world of mountain mists, lush vegetation, and a waterfall.
DAY 11: Singapore
To use the whole day sightseeing or relax independently—perhaps hitting Singapore’s malls, dining at Chinatown or Little India, or relaxing by the hotel pool.
DAY 12: Singapore—USA
Today, wave goodbye to Singapore as you transfer to the airport and board your return flight to the USA.
Day 1 Bangkok
Arrive at any time, and kick back at the hostel, or head out to explore the city before meeting up with fellow Roamies in the evening. Hungry? Hop on a tuk tuk and head to Chinatown where your CEO will lead you through the alleys and backstreets on a street food crawl. Savour your first taste of the best eats in Thailand–yum!
There are no activities planned until tonight's welcome meeting and your street food crawl with the group. Get out and explore vibrant Bangkok.
Day 2 Srinakarin Dam NP, Kanchanaburi
Ready to explore the “Venice of the east?” Climb aboard a motorized long-tail boat and zoom along the canals–known as klongs, that snake through Bangkok. Catch a glimpse of local life by the river; wooden houses built on stilts and ferries taking people to work, temples and school. Is it lunchtime yet? Good, because the next stop is Yimsoo Cafe, a G Adventures–supported project where you’ll slurp up a filling boat noodle lunch. Then it’s bye-bye big city as you head out for an overnight stay like no other on a unique floating-raft accommodation at Srinakarin Dam NP. It’s playtime here–choose to chill out on the deck, dive in for a refreshing swim, explore in a kayak or go for a wet-raft ride. Tonight you can fill up with a delicious Thai barbecue. Having fun yet? Of course you are and it’s only day 2.
Your accommodation tonight is truly unique on a floating-raft. The rafts have fully enclosed sleeping quarters (dorm-style with mattress and/or bunks and no gender separation) with shared-bath and a kitchenette where dinner and breakfast are prepared. Beverages are available for purchase or you can bring your own. There is a deck for lounging and swimming and kayaks or wet rafts are available for a small fee.
Day 3 Kanchanaburi
Ready to explore? Head out to the infamous Hellfire Pass and delve into some World War II sites, walk along the trail and visit Saiyok Noi Waterfall area for a tasty local lunch. All aboard as you jump on the local train, commonly known as the Death Railway and chug towards Kanchanaburi town. Visit the famed Bridge over the river Kwai, the Thailand-Burma Railway museum, and the war cemetery before heading to the hostel for some down time. Beer o’clock anyone?
Tonight, stroll through Kanchanaburi's riverside and enjoy the local nightlife.
Day 4 Kanchanaburi/Ayutthaya
Ready for another epic day? Of course you are! Stop by a rice farm then fill up on pad thai from a local shop before jumping on a bike at the iconic Ayutthaya ruins. Snap that perfect picture at the Mahathat temple–famed for its Buddha head in the root of a banyan tree. Cycle around the massive reclining Buddha at Wat Logayasutharam in search of the perfect angle. After, hop on a boat for a ride around the city's island and stop at Wat Chai Wattanaram for more insta-worthy pics. Want more? Visit the food market and choose to share a plate of river prawns before hopping into a rocket-nosed tuk tuk to the train station. That was a busy day! Regain your strength in a sleeper car during the overnight train ride heading north.
On the train berths are arranged 'open plan' either side of a central aisle. There are upper and lower berths, each berth has a curtain which can be pulled across for privacy. There is no gender separation.
Day 5 Chiang Mai
Hit the ground running as you disembark the train and climb on one of the famous red Songthaews–a local open-air truck. Khao soi for breakfast?? Yes, please! Stop at a street-side shop for this traditional northern Thai noodle soup with coconut milk and sweet curry–yum! From here walk through the old town to your hostel, then the afternoon is yours. Sample delicious street food, visit temples or just kick back with your new friends with a Singha lager. Later, delve into the bustling Chiang Mai night bazaar. Shop-til-you drop, kick your feet up in a lounge chair for a foot massage or try the bizarre, yet satisfying fish pedicure. Living your best life? Yeah!.
Day 6 Chiang Mai
Early riser? Come on, there must be some! Join in the age-old tradition of alms giving to local monks at the foot of the Suthep Hill. After, indulge in a blessing and do some chanting at Wat Prathat Doi Suthep. The rest of the day you are free to do as much or as little as you desire–your CEO has you covered. Feeling zen? There are hundreds of Buddhist temples to visit. Feeling active? Jump on a bicycle or tuk tuk to explore the countryside. Or, how about channeling your inner chef at a cooking class learning to make a perfect Pad Thai. Freedom can also be hanging back at the hostel, as always, you're the boss! Just be back in time, cause tonight you've got a date with your new besties.
Day 7 Chiang Mai
Say goodbye to your Roamies and depart at any time, or keep the adventure going by heading to Hanoi, Vietnam on the next leg of this epic adventure.
