Editor’s Take

What to Look for in Ukraine Tour Reviews

Most trip reviews tend to focus on some or all of these 5 key areas, not all of which may be relevant to you: the tour guide, travel company, service level, country or countries traveled in, and the trip itinerary.

Remember, just because you see a 1 star review doesn’t necessarily mean that person disliked the country.

When someone says they are going to Europe, most people don’t assume the traveler is going to go to Ukraine! That doesn’t mean Ukraine should be skipped though – it’s just not as common as other stops in Europe. Travelers saw this as a plus, because you don’t have to deal with the high tourist crowds that you may encounter in Paris or Rome, yet you still get a classic European feel.

Ukraine is a diverse country, with a combination of cities, the mountains, and the sea. Most of Ukraine tours include multiple Eastern Europe countries, with Moldova being the most popular country paired with Ukraine tours. This is an awesome opportunity to get more out of your trip.

If you’re looking to do outside activities, such as laying on the beach or hiking through the Carpathian Mountains, consider a trip during the summer, when the weather is warmer and sunnier. If you’re considering a winter trip to Ukraine, Kiev has an awesome Christmas Market surrounding the weeks of Christmas. Shoulder seasons offer an opportunity to visit while the weather is a reasonable temperature, and without the crowds that comes with summer.

Most Ukraine trips do have a fair amount of train rides and transportation involved, so reviews recommend traveling light, even with just carry-on luggage, so you don’t have to carry around all your belongings. The trains are noted as being comfortable and a fun way to travel, because you get to see the beautiful countryside that those who fly between cities miss out on.

Elevators are not always the norm in Europe, so this is another reason to be mindful when packing. The accommodations are mostly ranked as “value” with 3 stars, so some may include an elevator, but know it’s not always the standard in Europe.

Most of the trips were ranked “moderate” for the physical level, but take a look at the itinerary to make sure the activities match what you’re hoping to do. For those who aren’t into the outdoors, a trip including adventures in the Carpathian Mountains will probably not be of interest.

Since Ukraine is such a historically rich country, lots of tours offer the chance to learn about the history and immerse themselves in the culture, including visits with the locals. Sometimes the best way to get to know the country is through interacting with local people, and it can give you a new appreciation for the country once you experience a day through the life of someone who lives there.
