What travelers are saying

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

What travelers are saying

"Butterfield and Robinson just planned and executed a great, great trip for us to the Amalfi coast. All the services and hotels were wonderful and the guides were great fun and and well informed. Many nice surprises along the way and an itinerary we would have had trouble putting together on our own was effortless. All guides were well trained the transportation and drivers were polite and on time. The recommended hotels were amazing. We loved every minute of our vacation."

What travelers are saying

"This trip was fantastic from the accommodation, experiences, food and company. Albatross Tours think of everything and provide you with a very magical and well organised tour. We loved the flexibility of #mytime and were able to pop in and out of the organised activities as we wished. Maritza our tour guide (or Tour Mum) was amazing and made sure she was always one step ahead of us all. Our fellow tour companions became our tour family! I couldn't recommend Albatross Tours highly enough for all your travel experiences."

Additional details

Common Rhone River Cruise Routes

The most common Rhone River Cruise Routes start in Lyon and end in Avignon, or do the reverse route. At times, trip operators combine the Rhone River with other rivers or tributaries along the way, such as the Rhine River or the Saone River. Some trips travel all the way to the Mediterranean sea. Some start in Geneva and explore the northern part of the Rhone. Most trips last 7-10 days with options to extend the trip length.

What is the weather like along the Rhone River?

The weather along the Rhone River is variable, depending on the season. The season for a Rhone River Cruise is from March-December, with the majority of visitors coming in the late spring to early fall. Being that the river starts near the Alps by Geneva, that area of the river can be windy and cold.

As the river travels closer to the Mediterranean sea, the weather becomes more pleasant and sunny. The spring tends to be more windy, the summer more peaceful and the fall tends to receive more rain. As always, thoroughly research the season you are going in and make sure to pack what you need.

When is the best time to take a Rhone River Cruise?

The most popular and best time of year to take a Rhone River Cruise is during the months of June, July, August and September. The reason this is a great time is because the weather is sunny and favorable, with the cheer that is summertime.

Many French people come to the region in August, during their vacations, which makes it a crowded time. September is a time of grape harvests, so can be good for those looking to take a wine tasting river cruise. Regardless, anytime in these summer months is best.

Are there Christmas Markets along the Rhone River?

Yes! What better way to absorb the cheer of the Christmas season then attending a Christmas market? Europe is known for its unique and dazzling Christmas markets. Yes, the Rhone River also has Christmas markets in Lyon, Avignon and Marseilles.

One will find quaint buildings decorated with fairy lights and handmade treasures and treats to truly get in the spirit of the holiday.  Many cruises along the Rhone River during the holiday season are specifically themed toward Christmas markets.

Who will enjoy a Rhone River Cruise?

Rhone River Cruises can be enjoyed by anyone who loves traveling with other people, traveling by boat and seeing the countryside and ports along the way. Someone who loves excellent guides and itineraries that will truly reveal the gems of this area, will enjoy this cruise.

Someone who loves culture, history, excellent cuisine and wine and a relaxing time will enjoy a Rhone River Cruise. Most cruise companies attract travelers over 50 for their tours. As with any holiday, you can decide what level of activities fit your travel goals.
