Company owners Gene and Jo Ann Taylor have a genuine passion for active living. By that, we mean not living life sitting on a couch and watching it go by on a television screen, or staying so close to home that we could only dream about what the rest of the world was like. Always adventuresome and active, we decided to make it our life’s work. So in 1989 Jo Ann quit Nike and Gene left a national marketing and management company and together we founded The Walking Connection. From the beginning our concept was to create a community of like-minded people who enjoy walking, hiking, being outside, and for many, traveling and exploring some of the world’s greatest destinations by foot, kayak, hot air balloon or occasional zip line.

Being active and enjoying life is at the very core of who we are and what we do. Our company is not simply about fitness, exercise and being healthy. Though those are a big part, we are also about enjoying the great wines of the world, the unique flavors of local cuisine, meeting people of different cultures and taking long walks, just to see what’s around the next corner.

We are also rooted in adventure travel. We lead exciting journeys that balance active exploration with exceptional comfort. We criss-cross the globe searching for just the right places to visit and then create amazing itineraries that provide our traveling guests with authentic experiences. Whether walking through a bustling city market, the narrow passages of a rural village or hiking to a distant mountain top, we connect our guests to each other as well as to the local flavor, culture, cuisine and of course, great walks that are in nearly every corner of the world.

Walking is the connection…

…to an enriched lifestyle.

Walking is the connection…

…to the greatest destinations in the world!

As established leaders in the providing healthy living information, especially geared toward fitness walking, training and hiking, in 1992 we added a new component to our list services, which at the time was just beginning to gain popularity in the fitness, lifestyle and travel industries – active adventure travel. Our recipe for success is pretty simple. We take the existing active lifestyles of our clients, learn about their personal preferences and combined them with our professional planning skills to to create and personally lead remarkable travel adventures. Our goal is to treat every guest as special. And we do our best to make you a lifelong customer and guest by working tirelessly to earn your trust, over and over again, year after year.

Accommodation

,Day 1: Stay in Style Tonight you stay in a historic hotel in a beautifully renovated 18th-century former ecclesiastical residence that was built along the Camino de Santiago to shelter pilgrims.Careful renovation preserved the wood floors, beams, and exposed stone and has been artfully combined with modern chrome fixtures, tile, and minimalist decor and fabrics. Roncesvalles is a tiny town at 3,000 feet, just below the Ibañeta Pass of the Pyrenean border between France and Spain.   Day 2: Stay in Style Tonight’s lodging is on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Pamplona. With an intriguing old quarter, lovely parks, and main square, the capital of Navarra is of course best known for the running of the bulls through its historic center, which takes place during the San Fermín festival in mid-July.   Day 3: Stay in Style Surrounded by vineyards, with dramatic limestone hills in the distance, your hotel is in the town of Briñas in the wine-growing region of La Rioja, and from your historic home you can stroll along the Ebro River to several wineries or we can arrange a private wine tasting at your hotel with advance reservations (at an additional cost).   Day 4: Stay in Style Tonight you stay in an intimate boutique hotel in a renovated 19th-century building in the historic center of Burgos that offers modern guest rooms individually decorated with soft earth tones combined with original architectural touches. Helpful concierge service can help recommend bars and restaurants nearby, as well as arranging bicycle rentals. Burgos has an incredible depth of history, scenic walks along the Duero and Arlanza Rivers. Your hotel is located in the old quarter and easily accessible on foot from the hotel are the UNESCO World Heritage site cathedral, the Casa del Cordón palace, the Plaza Mayor main square, the Museum of Human Evolution, and the statue of El Cid.   Day 5: Stay in Style In a small pueblo (village) between the cities of Burgos and León, a three-sister team provides a warm welcome to guests at this hotel, which their father founded over 30 years ago. With a true country-house feel, guest rooms (all with balconies) and common areas are modern and elegant, artfully white with fresh flowers and unique architectural touches. The on-site fine-dining restaurant makes the hotel a weekend destination for foreign and local visitors.   Day 6: Stay in Style A transfer takes you to your beautifully renovated historic hotel, with its own antique shop and a magnificent dining room, where you are free to sample a few local specialties or treat yourself to a real feast. Tonight you’ll stay in a boutique hotel constructed in a restored home that has spacious, individually decorated guest rooms with polished wood floors combining Spanish antiques with exposed beams and brick.   Day 7: Stay in Style Tonight, a beautifully restored 17th-century miller’s residence within a biosphere reserve is a peaceful haven in the Galician countryside is your home. The hotel grounds and gardens along the river include both an outdoor swimming pool and a river bathing area, and a canoe and bicycles are available for rental. Individually decorated guest rooms feature unique antiques, hand-embroidered linens, polished wood floors, and exposed beams and stone. With an excellent wine selection, the fireside fine-dining restaurant offers updated Galician cuisine from a wood-fired oven, featuring dishes such as suckling pig, lamb, and capon.   Day 8: Stay in Style You are dropped off at your hotel, where you can refresh before setting off again to find the trail of scallop shells embedded in the cobbled streets, flanked by stone archways, until you arrive at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela—a breathtaking sight both in its grandeur and in the sense of overwhelming accomplishment it inspires in the walkers and pilgrims who have arrived herefrom the many Camino routes. The peregrinos’ final steps lead to the statue of Saint James at the cathedral entrance.
